Light the Way

from 79.95

On this night I visited Crater Lake National Park with the hopes of capturing the Northern Lights. A large CME (sun spot explosion) occurred on our Sun 2 days prior and the charged solar particles were expected to hit the earth with great intensity.  Unfortunately, the solar flare collided with earth about 12 hours earlier and was over by the time it was dark enough for the Pacific Northwest of the USA.

Not deterred, and always in amazement of the beauty of Crater Lake, I changed from looking north to looking south. Building a composition to photograph the Milky Way over the caldera.

I visited my favorite place in the park the lone whitebark tree. As previously photographed in Whitebark and the Wizard. Knowing there was quite a bit of traffic and people in the park also hoping for the aurora, I understood there was an opportunity to capture unique lighting on the rim from automotive headlights.

On this artwork, automotive headlamps illuminate particulate over the caldera rim and appear to be illuminating the Milky Way.
